Espejo Escénico is a group formed by women artists with extensive experience in music and theater in Oaxaca, since its inception as a company have been governed under the premise of bringing the
performing arts to marginalized communities and away from the artistic and cultural activity in their community.
Installing this scenic piece in the United States is to give continuity to our work of exercising the right to access to the enjoyment of the arts, where borders do not exist, resignifying space and time in poetic signs, which identify us and give us a sense of belonging to face our present.
Cruzando Ensueños is a piece that takes place simultaneously in Oaxacan communities where there are families fragmented by the absence of women and men who have left in search of better living
conditions, as well as in the United States, in the cities where they have come to fulfill their needs. This is how we intend to be a link between migrants and the communities where their families are.
The simultaneity of the presentations in the United States and Oaxaca, creates an intersection in space-time where through a
dreamlike journey, we find ourselves all together despite the borders.
- Our goals center around actively contributing to the preservation of cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible, fostering the enrichment of cultural diversity, and promoting human creativity. We aim to achieve this by actively stimulating, linking, strengthening, promoting, and disseminating the exercise and enjoyment of the performing arts within migrant communities, specifically focusing on the Oaxacan community in the United States. Through these efforts, we aspire to create a vibrant and inclusive space that celebrates and sustains cultural traditions while fostering a sense of belonging and appreciation among Oaxacans living in the United States.
- Resignifying our customs and traditions, we aim to invite the migrant population to engage in reflection, fostering an appreciation for these practices as valuable assets to navigate our present challenges.
- Our goal is to promote among the migrant population of Mexico and Latin America the opportunity to recognize, imagine, and reflect on our reality through the arts. By doing so, We aspire to facilitate a deeper connection to our cultural identity, encouraging a meaningful exploration of our shared experiences and narratives.
Cruzando Ensueños is a musical performance piece that becomes a ritual offering to the migrants who strayed on their way to the United States, and is also dedicated to the family members who remain in their place of origin. It is a work inspired by the farewell rituals for the dead in the indigenous Mexican communities of the state of Oaxaca, and at the same time reflects on the difficult undocumented crossing of families, women and children. The play is performed by actress and singer Georgina Saldaña and directed by playwright Liliana Alberto, both Mexican and migrant artists. The play lasts 45 minutes and has a musical repertoire of six songs, one of which is in the Zapotec
indigenous language. The musical compilation is primarily in Spanish and explores the celebration of life and mourning.
Its first season in the fall of 2022 was performed in New Jersey, New York and Oaxaca, Mexico. The play in the United States was presented in spaces accessible to migrant families such as in: Pedacitos de Patria, Spirit Gallery, Mi Casa es Puebla, in New Jersey; also in Bula Arts and culture, Queens, NY; The Lutheran church El buen pastor, and the Mixteca Organization in Brooklyn, NY; The presentations in Mexico, were performed in southern border communities where the transit of migrants coming from Central and South America is common, such as in Chicapa de Castro, Santo Domingo Petapa and the neighborhood of La Soledad in the Istmo de Tehuantepec, in Oaxaca.
