A Scenic Ritual in Tribute to Migrants

The theatrical piece "Crossing Dreams" was presented on Sunday, April 14th, at the Whitney Museum in New York as part of the celebration of Migrant Empowerment Day. Written and directed by the talented Oaxacan actress and director, Liliana Alberto.

"Crossing Dreams" is more than just a play; it's a scenic ritual inspired by the traditions of Oaxacan culture that invites the audience to reflect on the harsh experience of crossing the desert border. It's also a vision of our grief process and our relationship with "death", the main character of this monologue performed by actress and singer Georgina Wonchee, who adds a unique dimension to the narrative, immersing the audience in an emotional journey through the struggle and dreams of those who migrate in search of a better life.

The production of the play is notable not only for its artistic quality but also for its commitment to migrant communities. Before being presented in such a bustling venue as the Whitney Museum, "Crossing Dreams" toured through spaces that welcome and assist newcomers to New York City and New Jersey: "The Church of the Divine Shepherd", "Mixteca Organization" in Brooklyn, "Bulla Center for the Arts" in Queens, "Mi Casa es Puebla", and "Pedacitos de Patria" Craft Store, in Passaic NJ, among others.

It's important to highlight that "Crossing Dreams" is a binational project, with a simultaneous version in Oaxaca, Mexico. Starring actress Lucina Rojas and presented in communities of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec for families of migrants, those who wait, those who share the illusion of embracing their loved ones again, and who, for the span of an hour, witnessed and experienced the same sensations and emotions as their relatives in NJ and NY. These presentations not only allowed the play to reach diverse audiences but also emphasized the project's commitment to migrant communities and their inclusion.

The Whitney Museum of American Art is one of the most important museums in New York. The presentation of "Crossing Dreams" in this prestigious venue underscores the relevance and cultural impact of the work in the city.

The stage design by Edgar Mora and the costumes created by Azucena Galicia, 100% Mexican talent, add a striking aesthetic to the production, with each element characterizing a meaning of tradition and healing, further enriching the theatrical experience.

The importance of making museums lively, inclusive spaces with community interaction is highlighted through the piece "Crossing Dreams". Many attendees expressed their excitement at feeling touched by the work, as it reminded them of their migrant condition and loved ones they haven't been able to say goodbye to.

This emotional interaction between the play and the audience highlights art's ability to create meaningful connections and promote reflection and empathy. The participation of the two Mexican artists resonated especially among the migrant audience who found in this work an authentic reflection of their own experiences and challenges.

In summary, "Crossing Dreams" is a touching theatrical piece that transcends cultural and geographical borders to address universal themes of migration, identity, and hope. With its innovative approach and significant social impact, this production by Espejo Escénico marks a standout moment in the theatrical landscape of Mexico and New York, setting an inspiring precedent for future artistic collaborations focused on the migrant community.
